ENG) I will be attending Agouleme's Comic Book Festival, in France, this weekend. This is Europe's most important Comic Book Fair and it'll be my first time attending it. I'm arriving there Friday morning and will be staying there with a bunch of colleagues until Sunday. Anyone else going!?

Hi! I've finally found the time to render out this sketch I did while I was in Canada last year. I promised my muse that I would finish up this concept, and well... I'm a man of my word. I'm also taking a chance to thank David Chung, who just became the 666th member of DEISIGN's Facebook Page, by dedicating this Hellbull to him. I however would like to thank ALL of you guys for your patience and support despite my posts being scarce lately. The project I'm currently designing for is taking most of my time (not a trace of complaint here): It is a CG Animated shortfilm directed by Carlos Baena, and I assure you, it's looking amazing so far... and VERY out of the ordinary. I'll keep you guys posted on this. Anyhow, I will resume posting more often after the end of the month. I have some cover illustrations lined up, and you can expect those along with new time-lapse videos and tutorials.

Brancusi | Serra | Guggenheim

Visited the Brancusi / Serra exhibit today at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. As always, Frank Gehry's building is a treat in itself, but what I really did not want to miss was Brancusi's itinerant exhibit and specially one of his pieces called Bird in space. I've known and admired this piece for years and only today I got to have it right in front of me and walk around it. Ever since I studied art history and became aware of Constantin Brancusi's work, he has been one of my favorite sculptors ever. Probably because his work strives for the pure, basic and non subjective beauty of shapes... and I do believe there is such a thing. In fact, this is something I look for in my work, even when I'm designing the ugliest of creatures: Some basic shapes, curves and lines simply "work" and others simply don't, just like sounds can become harmonic or just noise.

Wipe'Out 2097 was my favorite racing game growing up and arguably the fastest racing game evarrrr. But as a designer at heart, something I enjoyed a lot about this game was the overall design language and its chunky futuristic shapes. Of course, it being and old, low-poly game had something to do with the blockiness, but still, the makers of this game managed to arrange really cool and aggressive shapes, specially on the vehicle designs. To show you how much I liked this game and its design work, bellow you'll find some old vehicle sketches I did a while ago as an homage, inspired by it... or I guess you can just call it Fan Art, no? haha.

Toxic Creature + Rendering Steps | From the Sketch Sessions at Guru Studio, Toronto.

Hola! I took a short break from my freelance work today to render a personal sketch I did earlier this year. The base pencil sketch for this handsome fellow was done during one of the Sketch Sessions I conducted at Guru Studio, in Toronto. This particular creature was part of a session themed around Classic Movie Monsters, were we sketched our own versions of them, and then created our own original monster concept. The result of that last exercise was this Cold War-Nuclear-Toxic-Thing.
Bellow you'll find an animated Gif showing the various stages of rendering I went through for this piece. I hope some of you will find it, if nothing else, interesting to see. As always, comments are welcome. Thank you!

Hi there! I finally get to post this. A couple of months ago I was commissioned to create the cover for Xabiroi Comic Book Magazine. The subject for the cover was left entirely up to me, so I decided to take my Post-Apocalyptic Kids series one step further and do a full on painting of the toughest kiddo yet. Additionally, a lot of emotion went into this painting, since I made it as a gift to one of my buddies, who tragically lost a leg in a motorbike accident about a year ago. This is for him, because he really IS the toughest kiddo yet.

Bellow you can see the final illustration without any text. I hope you guys like it. Also, in a couple of days I will be posting a timelapse video showing the process of creating this image, so stay tuned if you'd like to see that. Thanks!

Milano Film Festival 2011!

I just got back from spending 4 days at the Milano Film Festival, in Italy, where I was invited to present my film Earlth & Moonch. What a blast! The festival's organization was great and I got to explore Milan in the inestimable company of my bestest ally, Emma Nuttall; who did a much better job at documenting and updating our festival shenanigans on her Twitter.

It was quite overwhelming to not only present my film Earlth & Moonch in front of this audience, but to also see it open the Focus on Animation event, screened along with amazing animated shorts like the student-Oscar winning Defective Detective, Meet Buck, Dripped, I'm a Monster or Pixels. I felt hugely honored to be part of this. All I can do is thank the MIFF organization for the invite. I will be posting the interview as soon as it gets published.

The short film will be screened at the Milano Film Festival during the "Focus on Animation" event on September 12th at 10pm at Parco Sampione. I will also be attending the festival and presenting my film in person, so if any of you are planning on being there, please stop by and say hi!

ENG) I can finally post the animated short that I recently contributed to as the Character Designer and Art Director. This was a side project crafted in under three months, on top of a full time job, along with some of my coworkers from Guru Studio in Toronto. The short film was created for the Dreamscape CG Society Challenge, in which it won the Team Video Excellence Award. It was a treat to be able to work alongside such talented and creative people. Recently the winners for CG Society's Dreamscape Challege were announced and BAM! Waking Gus, the short film that I worked on as Art Director and Character Designer won the Excelence Award in its category! For those of you who didn't see the last post regarding this competition, this was a short film some co-workers from the studio and I did on our spare time in under 3 months. It was a fun experience and a true privilege to work alongside such talented people on Team Supersocks. Cintiq VS Paper | 15 minute Bot sketches

I had to go in the Studio today (Yes, on a Saturday, I know. Busy days.) and took a little break to sketch on a Cintiq for the first time ever. Later on the train, I did a similar sketch, this time on paper (Bare in mind this one was less than a couple of inches across). I'm not sold about the Cintiq really. There's still an offset between the tip of the pen and the brush-stroke. I think I will simply upgrade to a better tablet for my computer work. Thoughts?

I recently got commisioned an illustration for a Basque administration magazine. The illustration depicts three beings from the old Basque mythology in an office environment. Bellow is a sequence of images showing the step by step process of creating this illustration. If you look closely you'll notice a lot of decisions changing and corrections happening throughout the process (such as fixing two right feet on the "river maid"!!) I hope you guys will find this interesting.

Why so busy?

ENG) Hi there! It's been a while since my last post and I feel I owe you guys an explanation. Since November of 2010 I have been working as an Animator at Guru Studio, in Toronto, Canada. This studio is infested with amazingly talented people and the quality of the work the it puts out shows it. I am really happy and proud to be part of such a team. However, the production that I am involved in has demanded all of my focus and energy for the last while, and hence I haven't been able to reward your support by posting regularly. Fortunately, I am now starting to have a little more time in my hands to keep DEISIGN alive and share some of my work with you guys. Thank you so much!

ESP) Buenas! Ha pasado un tiempecito desde el último post en condiciones y me parece que os debo una explicación. Desde Noviembre de 2010 he estado trabajando como Animador en Guru Studio, en Toronto, Canadá. El estudio está infestado de talento y el trabajo que el estudio produce es muestra de ello: Gran criterio artístico y de diseño, animación chispeante y vivaz y un acabado siempre perfecto. Estoy encantado y muy orgulloso de formar parte de semejante equipo. Enembargo, la producción de la que formo parte ha requerido toda mi atención y energía desde que empecé, por lo que no he podido recompensar vuestro apoyo con posts regulares. ENG) One game I like to play is asking someone to name a random animal and an occupation or role. The fun of it is to combine both elements and quickly sketch the characters, with no previous exploration or excessive thought. I know this may seem against the usual rule, but I it really helps me loosen up and better my design skills, by having to play with shapes quickly while capturing a character and personality. In this case, waiting at Frankfurt airport, I got my dad to set a few challenges.

ESP) Un juego que me divierte es pedir a alguien a mi alrededor que nombre un animal cualquiera y una ocupación o rol. La gracia esta en combinar ambos conceptos y diseñar el personaje al momento, sin exploración previa ni pensar demasiado. Sé que puede parecer contrario a la norma habitual, pero me ayuda mucho a soltarme y mejorar mis habilidades de diseño de personajes, por que me obliga jugar con las formas rápidamente y a la vez capturar un personaje y una personalidad interesantes. En este caso, mientras esperaba en el aeropuerto de Frankfurt, fue mi padre quien me puso los retos.

ENG) Hello, hello! so this is more or less what I'm going for with DEISIGN's new look. I've been working alongside html wizzard Aitor Puertas, to help me move things around a little. It is quite likely that I'll be putting all the links into a footer at the bottom of the blog, allowing the images to take up all the width of the blog. Let me know what you think of it so far.

Earlth & Moonch | Short film finished!

ENG) My 4th year film at Sheridan College is finally finished (and so, DEISIGN resuscitates). It's been seven months of work, the last of which have been specially intense. However, it was a really enjoyable process and I am very happy with the result. The film was well received by the industry guests at Sheridan's Industry Day, who selected it as the Winner of Nelvana's Best 3D Computer Animation Award.
The video is still private, since festivals don't usually like films to be public on the Internet. However I would still like to reward your patience and support. So, if you would like to watch Earlth & Moonch simply join DEISIGN's Facebook Page before June 15th. All members will get a private invitation and password to view Earlth & Moonch on Vimeo.

ESP) Mi cortometraje de animación de mi cuarto año en Sheridan College ya esta acabado (Y con el, resucita DEISIGN). Han sido siete meses de duro trabajo, los últimos de los cuales fueron especialmente intensos. Pero aún y todo ha sido una experiencia genial y me he quedado muy contento con el resultado. La película fue muy bien recibida por los invitados de la industria durante la Jornada de la Industria de Sheridan College, quienes la eligieron ganadora del premio a la Mejor Animación 3D por Ordenador, de mano de Nelvana.
El vídeo es aún privado, ya que a los festivales no les suele hacer mucha gracia que las películas estén previamente subidas públicamente a Internet. Aún así, me gustaría recompensar vuestra paciencia y apoyo. Así que, si deseas ver Earlth & Moonch, simplemente únete a la Página de Facebook de DEISIGN antes del 15 de Junio. ENG) Hi there! Here's a Time Lapse video showing, in a hopefully entertaining way, the creative process of a 1 hour concept sketch. It's always fun to face an empty canvas with no previous planning and just see where your hand takes you (Carlos Huante talks a lot about this). Him and a tone of other artist whose Time Lapses and Tutorials I've devoured, are what motivated me to make this one of my own art, hoping that someone, somewhere, will enjoy watching it.

Siempre es divertido enfrentarse a un lienzo en blanco sin ninguna planificación previa y ver a donde te lleva tu mano (Carlos Huante habla mucho sobre esto). Also, I want to gain confidence when it comes to actual painting: color over canvas, no line; which is something I am not used to. So here I am trying... and Beauty it's a pretty good topic to get oneself inspired, if not the best.

Ademas, quiero desarrollar una mayor confianza cuando se trata de pintar, en mayúsculas: color sobre lienzo, sin linea. Algo a lo que no estoy habituado. Así que aquí ando, intentándolo... y es que la Belleza es bastante buen tema para inspirarlo a uno, si no el mejor.

Gainera, segurtasun gehiago bereganatu nahi dut benetan margotzerako orduan: kolorea mihise gainean, lerrorik gabe; ohituta ez nagoen zerbait alegia. The quickness of the process brings your aesthetic instincts out and the designs become honest and genuine. And on top of all this, it fun!

ENG) In one of my elective subjects at Sheridan College called Archetypes in Nature, Sience & Design, I have been though about the concept and science of Biomimicry (Finding inspiration in natural phenomenon's or environment's efficiency and survival mechanisms in manufacturing processes or in applied case-based reasoning). The image above is a concept piece I've developed as an exercise of Biomimicry, looking into the exceptional properties and functions that a pinecone has in nature. In addition to the philosophical and spiritual lessons acquirable from this subject, I am very excited to dig in it deeper, since I can already see how it could make my concept work a lot more diverse and believable.

ESP) En una de mis clases optativas en Sheridan College llamada "Arquetipos en la Naturaleza, la Ciencia y el Diseño, me ha sido presentado el concepto y la ciencia de la Biomimica (La búsqueda de inspiración en la eficacia y mecanismos de supervivencia de la naturaleza para el desarrollo de ideas y razonamientos). Getting back to school has been pretty crazy but finally I've taken some time to finish this piece. - The summarized idea of this macabre creation is the following: [A hoovering apparatus holds and keeps alive the contortionated body of a ruthless dictator. The body is completely still, seemingly lifeless if it weren't for the infected fumes exhaled from it's mouth. All biological processes, including breathing are artificially performed/aided by the apparatus. The dictator's commands are silently transmitted from his brain to its destination by the same machine.] Isn't that cute? ESP) Buenas! La vuelta a los estudios me ha tenido bastante liado pero por fin me he tomado un rato para finalizar esta pieza. La historia resumida tras tan macabra creación es la siguiente: [Una maquina flotante sostiene y mantiene con vida el contorsionado cuerpo de un despiadado dictador. El cuerpo cuelga inmóvil, aparentemente inerte si no fuera por el infecto aliento que exhala por la boca. Todos los procesos biologicos, incluida la respiración son asistidos por el aparato. Las ordenes del dictador son transmitidas en silencio desde su cerebro hasta el destinatario por la propia maquina.] Encantador, no? (ENG) Hello! Here's a little video editing I did as a present for my sister (last summer I believe). My father and I repainted her room while she was out on a trip. Many of you will want to kill me for having painted over that awesome Disney mural, but hey! It was my sisters bedroom and she felt the old mural was a bit too childish, so just deal with it! It was a fun experience and the video turned out OK, despite the fact that it was made in a couple of hours using MovieMaker (!!!!!). I thought I might as well share it with you guys. (ENG) Hi there! I drew this guy weeks ago as a quick sketch. Then, when I started doing some rendering, the idea of giving the "arachnid tank" a Sci-Fi Soviet Union type of look came along. It seemed natural to go all the way with this stylistic decision by emulating an hypothetical propaganda poster of that alternative future. The slogan (hopefully) reads: "We will safeguard the peace on the earth with the War Robot!". I apologize beforehand for possible misspellings (feel free to correct it). Critics are more than welcome! Don't be shy and help me improve!
Note: all the political symbols and acronyms have been used for stylistic reasons alone.

(ESP) Aupa! Hace unas semanitas que boceté esta especie de tanque arácnido. Más tarde, al empezar a trabajarlo un poco, la idea de hacerlo en un estilo Sovietico-futurista me vino a la mente. Me pareció lo suyo llevar esta decisión estética al extremo, creando un hipotético póster propagandístico de ese futuro alternativo. El eslogan dice (o eso espero): "Salvaguardaremos la paz en la tierra, con el Robot de Guerra!". Si alguien observa alguna corrección a hacer, adelante. Como siempre, permanezco sediento de critica.. no seáis tímidos y ayudadme a mejorar! Gracias!

New Illustrated Book Out!!

(ENG) At last I'm able to make this post! My second publication, a Children's book I recently illustrated, is out in stores (Only in the Basque Country... for now ;P). The name of the book is "Aurrera, Kakarraldo!" (Go, Beettle Go!) and it's written by Javi Cillero. You can find more information about it as well as order it online here. Bellow are a few of the illustrations in the book (without text). I did all the drawings in pencil and colored them digitally. As always, questions, comments and critiques are more than welcome. Post-Apocalyptic Kid _ 01 - STEPS

(ENG) Bellow you will find a description of each of the 7 steps I followed using Photoshop to tonally render Post-Apocalyptic Kid 01. This was a concept piece where the objective was to bring the original drawing to a level of effective rendering in a reasonable amount of time: 90 minutes approx.

STEP #1: The original pencil drawing is scanned and processed: Levels are used to obtain the desired level of contrast of the line work, as well as the intensity of the blacks and whites of the whole image. The layer that contains the line work is set to Multiply mode.

STEP #2: On a layer bellow, a base tone of gray is carefully applied to the entire drawing. This will work as a base silhouette helping us build the rest of the tonal rendering on top of it, without worrying about painting anywhere outside the figure and hence, saving us time.

STEP #3: This step consists on creating the local base tones for different parts of the figure. When deciding which tones to apply, think of contrast and harmony: placing the darks and light tones against each other will help differentiate the elements of the figure and make it easily readable, even when you squint your eyes (A chess-board is a very simple and geometric example of this). I believe I used 4 local base tones but 3 could work as well. Another reason why I do this is so that the shadows that will later be applied affect each area differently: The darker parts will have darker shadows, the lighter parts brighter highlights, etc. This local tones are applied in different clipping mask layers, all subordinated to the silhouette layer.

STEP #4: Light and Shadows. In two layers above the previous clipping masks (I usually place the shadow layer under the light layer), a low opacity brush is used to describe volumes withing the form by creating lighted areas and shadowy ones. Being consistent with the placement of the lights and shadows will give a sense of where the light source is located relative to the figure, aiding to its three-dimensional effect and its existence in an environment. However, note that, since the goal here is to render the image in a comic "book cover" type of style, the line work is kept all the way through, which helps the image hold together and saves us a lot of rendering time. Consequently though, the final look will never be extremely painterly or sculptural, for that can only be achieved with a total absence of line.

STEP #5: Cast Shadows. On a layer above the previous ones but still below the line work, a solid black cast shadow projected on certain areas of the body and the ground. This layer is set to Strong Light mode and to an opacity of 50% in this particular case. The cast shadow on the ground is achieved by distorting a copy of the silhouette and modifying it until it becomes a sound projection of the figure.

STEP #6: Highlights and textures. Various texture brushes are used to quickly add details and richness to the piece. You can easily turn photographs of textures such as scratches or ink splatters into brushes by turning them into black and white and then saving it as a brush under the edit menu. The ground plane is also created using a photograph and distorting its perspective until it matches the virtual ground plane on which the character is standing. Highlights such as the one in the kid's headphones are created with a soft white brush at 70% opacity on a layer above the line work. This will create a shine effect, since the light will burn over the line.

STEP #7: Final look. In this case I added certain typographies as graphic design elements for presentation sake. Also, the smart focus filter was used to add some extra-crispness to the final image. and it's DONE.

(ENG) Here's the first of a series of badass kiddos I started drawing recently. There'll be more of these coming including some explanatory posts on how I go about doing them (hoping that someone will find them helpful or at least interesting); so stay tuned if you like this kind of stuff. As always, feedback is more than welcome. Also, if you have any requests or suggestions on what you'd like to see in those "making of" posts, speak up! I'll appreciate any guidance for I've never done that type of posts before. By the way, just in case you were wondering what this Kiddo is listening to, it's Downtown by Frank Sinatra.

(ESP) Éste es el primero de una serie de niños bribonzuelos y traviesetes que he comenzado a dibujar hace poco. Llegarán más posts de esta serie incluyendo algunos sobre el proceso de creación de las imagenes (espero que alguien encuentre estos últimos de utilidad o al menos interesantes); así que estate alerta si te gustan este tipo de cosas.
